About Legendaria art and narrative exhibition

For a long time I had wanted to combine the two fundamental elements of the Spanish folklore and myths. On the one hand, the word. The stories transmitted from generation to generation that give rise to fantastic legends and beings. On the other hand, the image. The visual depiction of these tales which are part of our cultural identity and collective imagination. Thanks to the invaluable help of my boss and co-workers at Besarilia, as well as the generosity of all donors and participants, that idea is already a reality.

With a dual format per display case, featuring a short story based on a myth and an illustration inspired on it, Legendaria opens like a book to the public, showing the magic of our legends. A unique look at these fascinating stories, through the eyes of over fifty established visual artists and writers.

In addition, the exhibition is completed with works of art by Francisco de Goya, Gustave Doré, Casado del Alisal and other 16th to 19th century artists, from the archives of the National Library of Spain, National Museum of Romanticism and National Museum of Natural Sciences/CSIC.

I have had the great honor, pleasure and challenge of restoring some of these digitized works of art to be seen in all their recovered splendor and large format.

The exhibition took place on “the bridges” of Casa del Lector (Matadero Madrid) from November 26 2022 to April 9 2023, in the frame of the 14th edition of the alternative culture festival Sui Generis Madrid, dedicated to the magical thinking.

Update: The Legendaria exhibition had more than 25000 visitors at the time but that figure increased every year, as it has been moved among the libraries of the Madrid Regional Government since then.
